Baby librarian Tilly and her mum Jen review the colours board book Black Bird Yellow Sun by Steve Light.
Tilly reviews Black Bird Yellow Sun
This is my favourite book this week! There is a worm on every page and I’m very good at pointing at the worm and shouting ‘worm!’. There are also colours on every page and I’m good at colours. There aren’t many words but that’s fine because the best part of the book is the worm anyway. I read this book lots now.
Jen reviews Black Bird Yellow Sun
This book is wonderful in its simplicity. You follow the black bird on its day through vibrant colours, and the ink-and-paper collage illustrations are a huge part of the appeal for me. It is a very pretty book to look at, and I think it’s my favourite ‘colours’ book that I’ve seen. And it is very fun to spot the worm on every page — it’s a bit tricky to find on ‘black bird, grey rocks’ but Tilly is a pro at it now. This is another one of those books that I didn’t initially love (when I read it the first time, my thought was ‘is that all? it’s a bit boring.’) but as Tilly gets older and better at reading, I’ve found that this is a perfect book for her now. And it’s not like any of the colours books out there have scintillating plots and well-developed characters anyway!
