Baby librarian Tilly and her mum Jen review the wonderful outdoorsy picture book The Hike by Alison Farrell.
Tilly reviews The Hike
This is a great book! It’s about three children who go on a hike and have a great adventure. They pick berries and cross a stream and get lost and climb a mountain and they see all sorts of wonderful things like frogs and birds. I love being outside and I like hiking. There are some trails near my house and sometimes I hike them with Mummy and Daddy and I can even climb mountains. Being outside is the BEST. If I can’t be outside then reading about it is acceptable. This book is good for that.
Jen reviews The Hike
This is probably my favourite picture book of 2019. I love the story, I love the illustrations, I love the characters, and I love the innocent delight that pervades the whole book. This really is an ode to the outdoors, and a great way to inspire kids to get outside and notice all the wonderful treasures around them. The pencil (and crayon?) drawings are one of my favourite parts of the book. The colours are gorgeous and capture the colours you see in nature, and done in a style that makes you think an extremely talented and artistic child drew them. You know, that style that’s kid-like but actually good? There must be a word for that.
