I love this book! This is a very fun book to listen to because the rhymes are GREAT. I know all the dogs now and my favourite one is Schnitzel von Krumm with the very low tum. I also like Bottomley Potts, covered in spots. The pictures are good too. I like the birds pecking at the seeds in one picture but the best picture is Hairy Maclary looking in the rubbish bin. The best best best bit of the book is when they all see Scarface Claw. He’s the toughest tom in town and I can make a really good scary meowing sound, just like Scarface Claw.

This is a fantastic read-aloud book that has rightfully become a classic. All the books in the series are fun to read aloud, and it’s great to see the recurring characters, but I have a soft spot for the original and this first book is my favourite of all the Hairy Maclary books. This has become a regular in our bedtime reading schedule and one that I have memorised. The rhythm, rhyme, cadence, illustrations, and charming and adorable adventures of Hairy Maclary and his friends all combine to make basically the perfect book.
