Baby librarian Tilly and her mum Jen review the delightful birthday board book It’s My Birthday by Helen Oxenbury.

This book is pretty cool. There is food and cooking and animals and birthdays and I like all of those things. Well, I definitely like the animals. There are chickens and a bear and a cat and a dog and a pig. I know all of those animals! And they all help get ingredients to make a cake. I enjoy helping in the kitchen too. I think I will like making cakes when I’m allowed to. And I think I like birthdays. It was my Daddy’s birthday a little bit ago and it’s Mummy’s birthday today and I think birthdays mean extra good food so I like that. I’m even allowed to have some cake. So yes, a good book full of good things.

This is an adorable and wonderful book about a little boy who has a birthday. He makes a cake because what good is a birthday without cake? He gets help getting ingredients from his various animal friends, makes a cake, and then they all celebrate by eating the cake. I love that there is food and a recipe integrated into the story, and the drawings are gorgeous (you can’t go wrong with Helen Oxenbury). For more children’s books about birthdays, see here.
