Baby book review: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Tilly’s review

This is one of the first books I ate! It’s a good size for holding and eating — not too big and not too small. The pages are also different sizes and some of them have holes in them. I like that. I used to let Mummy read the whole book but now I like to skip to Saturday because it has the most food. Also I like the butterfly at the end.

Jen’s review

It took me an embarrassingly long time and a lot of rereading to realise that the caterpillar ate through the apple, pears, plums, strawberries, oranges, and the food of the Saturday feast. I wondered for some time how a caterpillar could possibly be hungry after eating an entire apple. I have somewhat mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I like the message about the importance of eating your greens (‘he ate through one nice green leaf and after that he felt much better’). On the other hand, the caterpillar is wasting a lot of food, and food waste is a big environmental concern. If you’re still hungry, caterpillar, eat the rest of the apple! In all seriousness, this is a great book and a classic for good reason.
